Other aspects and features of automatic gate openers to consider...

What else will you need to install your automatic gate opener?

Other Materials You May Need...

Low voltage wire: (16 gauge, multi- stranded, dual conductor, direct burial wire) will be needed. Wire length depends upon which accessories used and the distance between the transformer power supply and gate. [1000 ft. (304 m) max.]

Solar Panels: If your gate is more than 1000 ft. (304 m) away from an AC 110V power source, Solar Panels must be used to trickle charge the battery.

Push to Open Bracket: If your gate opens out from your property, you need to purchase special order a "push-to-open" bracket. You can program the gate operator for this application. (Dual gates require 2 brackets)

Gate Reinforcement: If you have thin walled tube or panel gates, you will need to reinforce them.

Mounting Plate: Depending on the type of gates, a horizontal cross member or mounting plate may be needed to mount the opener arm and gate bracket to the gate.

Properly installed gate: Your gate must be in good working order, firmly hung on an anchored fence post, and able to swing freely and evenly. This operator WILL NOT WORK on gates with wheels or gates that drag on the ground.

Gates weighing more than 250 pounds require ball bearing hinges. (not provided by Mighty Mule).

Gate post(s) must be at least 4 inches square or 4 inches in diameter.

Gate post greater than 8 inches thick will require longer bolts than the ones provided to mount post brackets to the gate post.

Access
Most gate operators offer remote control transmitters and a receiver as part of gate opener packages. If remote transmitters are not provided, you may purchase them separately, however, a radio receiver is required to pick-up the signal from the transmitters. The receiver can be purchased separately and is connected to the accessory terminal on the control board of the gate operator. Other access devices can also be used, such as a digital keypad, push button, Telephone entry systems, card readers, exit sensors and so on.
Exiting
How will your gate be opened from the inside of your property when exiting? You may use your remote transmitter to open the gate when exiting, but you may also use the following devices:

Exit wand - A gate opening sensor buried along side of the driveway that senses vehicles electromagneticly and activates the gate to open automatically when a vehicle passes by.

Keypads, push buttons, card readers - Access devices may also be used as exiting devices. Exit Loops may be used, but must be buried in the driveway. This is best for new construction.
Safety
If a vehicle, person, or object is in the path of the gate, what kind of safety do you need when the gate is closing or opening?

All UL approved gate operators have a safety device feature built-in, so if your gate hits a car or object, it will back up similar to the feature that garage doors have. However, when a gate closes and hits and object, it may hit with 14 pounds of force or greater. This safety feature may not be recommended if you have a nice car (could cause dents or scratches), small children (can still cause harm or injury), or animals.

Other safety features offered in addition to the built-in features would be:

Photo Eyes - Electric photo eyes (just like garage door openers have) where a small device transmits an infrared beam to another device on the other side. When something is blocking the infrared beam the gate will stay open.

Loop detector and loop wire - Loop wire can be buried underneath your driveway, so that when your car is on top of the loop the gate will stay open. The loop wire is then plugged into a loop detector which is connected to your gate operator. Basic installation would be two loop wires (one loop on the inside and one loop on the outside of your gate) and one loop detector.

Reverse Edging - Edging material such as "Miller Edge" where you attach to the edge of your gate. It makes the gate more sensitive to the touch, so that when you gate does close on a vehicle, person or object - it will come in contact with the reverse edge first, thus, reducing the force of impact. The gate will then reverse in direction when it comes in contact with an obstruction.

Gate operator installations should be completed by a qualified installer only. B.J. Esberner and Associates, Inc. assumes no liability if product is installed incorrectly. Please see owners / installation manual for further details.
